Utah’s ‘Proud’ Rep Backs Trans Athletes, but Critics Fear for Women’s Sports

Rep. John Curtis (R-UT) has faced criticism for his support of the Fairness for All Act, a bill that some argue would “destroy female athletics” and infringe on religious liberties. Despite claiming to be against men participating in women’s sports during a debate for Utah’s third congressional district in October 2022, Curtis is a “proud sponsor” of the act, which aims to protect both LGTBQ+ rights and religious liberties simultaneously.

In his statement on Twitter, he explained that the bill strikes a balance between these two issues, ensuring critical protections for the LGTBQ+ community while also allowing religious institutions to worship as they see fit. However, critics argue that the act could lead to several negative consequences, including infringing upon medical professionals’ conscience rights and subjecting foster children to medically unproven treatments imposed by transgender ideology.

Additionally, it is believed that the Fairness for All Act would reduce privacy and safety for females in public spaces and destroy female athletics. Furthermore, critics argue that the act could violate freedom of speech, conscience, and religion for numerous businesses, charities, and individuals.

Curtis’ support for this bill seems to contradict his previous stance on men participating in women’s sports. In October 2022, he stated that he does not agree with men competing in women’s athletics and emphasized the importance of protecting young female athletes from male competitors. However, by co-sponsoring the Fairness for All Act, he is actively supporting a bill that could potentially lead to such situations.

Curtis has also celebrated Pride month in 2021, further raising questions about his stance on LGTBQ+ rights and religious liberties. In 2019, he argued that the Republican Party needs to “rebrand” itself regarding the relationship between religious rights and gay rights. He believes that a compromise is possible and cites Utah as an example of where this balance can be achieved.

However, critics argue that Curtis’ support for the Fairness for All Act undermines his commitment to fairness in sports and protecting religious liberties. They contend that the act could have far-reaching consequences that compromise both the safety and rights of various communities.
