United in Immigration: GOP and Dems Team Up for Higher Foreign Wages & Lower American Incomes

Republicans and Democrats in the House Appropriations Committee are working together to maximize the import of H-2B foreign visa workers for blue-collar jobs in construction, landscaping, and other industries. Businesses can currently import 66,000 H-2B foreign visa workers annually, and Congress has long allowed but not mandated DHS and the Labor Department to permit an additional 65,000. An amendment from Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) would require these departments to issue those extra 65,000 visas. While the H-2B visa program is known for abuse, some representatives believe it is still useful in certain industries like tourism. This move comes as Bureau of Labor Statistics data reveals that most recent job growth under President Joe Biden has gone to migrants rather than native-born Americans.
