Trump Tightens Grip on House GOP

Former President Donald Trump visited the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, DC, on June 13th, 2024, to meet with House Republicans – the first event of a busy day. The media frenzy outside the club anticipated Trump’s arrival for the closed-door meeting with Republican lawmakers.

A handful of protesters were present as well. DC’s bustling street corner was filled with staffers, lawmakers, journalists and protestors waiting for a glimpse of Donald Trump. Interestingly, if Trump had announced his visit to the Capitol Hill Club a few years ago, there would have been hundreds of young people (probably paid) outside demonstrating against him. This time around, there were only a couple middle-aged protesters and one in a bear costume. The “Resistance” seems to be dead as people are ready for change.

Inside the meeting, Rep. Matt Gaetz described it as “a pep rally,” with high spirits reportedly prevailing. Trump commended Rep. Nancy Mace for her recent primary victory and joked about the ongoing tension between Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Speaker Mike Johnson, according to sources. He also complimented Greene during the meeting.

The gathering followed the previous day’s congressional baseball game, where Republicans dominated Democrats 31-11. Team manager Rep. Roger Williams gifted Trump a ball and bat from the game in honor of his upcoming birthday on June 14th. Members of the group also sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

Trump also touched upon some more serious policy topics during his speech, such as advocating for exceptions to abortion laws and protecting women’s sports. After the meeting, House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik stated that Trump was warmly welcomed by the GOP members and expressed unity behind his candidacy.

We are 100% unified behind his candidacy and are ready to get to work on behalf of the American people,” she added. House Republicans aim to secure the border, achieve energy independence for the United States, promote peace through strength, defend election integrity, and fight against the weaponization of the justice system.

In a separate event, Trump is set to visit the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) on June 13th as well, to meet with Republican senators. The former president’s engagements with various branches of the Republican Party demonstrate his continued influence and support within the GOP.
