Transphobia on the Rise: Public Opinion Shifting Against LGBT+ Rights

In recent polls conducted by Pew Research and the University of Chicago’s NORC, it appears that Americans are increasingly turning against radical transgender policies. The surveys indicate a growing majority of voters believe that a person’s feelings about their “gender” are tied to their biological sex, contradicting claims made by transgender activists who argue for the importance of treating individual’s gender feelings over their biological sex.

According to the Pew Research poll, 65% of respondents said that a person’s gender is determined at birth and cannot be “chosen” later in life. This number has risen from previous years, showing a trend of people becoming more skeptical of transgender ideology. The data reveals a significant divide between Trump voters, with 90% believing that gender is assigned at birth, and Biden supporters, with only 39% agreeing with this sentiment.

Pew Research also found that blacks and Hispanics are less likely to support the idea of transgender individuals determining their own gender identity. Only 64% of black Biden voters and 46% of Hispanic Biden voters said that a person’s gender is determined at birth, as opposed to 32% of white Biden voters and 27% of Asian Biden voters.

The University of Chicago’s NORC survey revealed another aspect of growing opposition to transgenderism: the issue of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. The poll found that two-thirds of adults oppose allowing transgender females to compete against biological females. A large majority of respondents (69%) said that men who identify as women should not be allowed to compete as females, and only 21% supported the idea of using gender identity in such circumstances.

It is worth noting that opposition to transgenderism did not extend to gays in general, with respondents expressing little resistance to their presence or rights. However, these two polls, combined with a report by the anti-transgender activist group Boys vs. Women, show a clear trend of increasing opposition to radical transgender policies between 2016 and 2024. The percentage of people opposed to transgender “women” competing as women in sports has risen from about 30% in 2016 to over 60% today, illustrating the growing concerns and skepticism surrounding this issue among the American public.
