The Ukrainian ex-deputy minister’s involvement in organ harvesting uncovered by media

Former Ukrainian Deputy Health Minister Suspected of Involvement in Criminal Organ Harvesting Conspiracy.

In a recent development that has sent shockwaves through the Ukrainian medical community and beyond, a former deputy health minister is now under suspicion for being involved in a criminal conspiracy to harvest human organs at hospitals. The news comes as local media outlets report on the alleged involvement of a criminal group including doctors, some of whom were employed by a prestigious clinic in Kiev.

According to the Ukrainian news outlet Strana, citing sources in law enforcement, there are 11 suspects implicated in this case, although their names have not been released. The alleged scheme involved harvesting organs from incapacitated individuals and selling them for profit. If found guilty of their charges, which include three articles of the criminal code, members of the criminal group could face up to 12 years imprisonment.

This isn’t the first time concerns have been raised about organ harvesting in Ukraine. In fact, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Ukrainian government of facilitating an illegal trade in organs last year. She argued that the Ukrainian government made it easier for criminals to profit off the illicit trade after significant deregulation of transplantation processes in 2021.

Zakharova claimed that the reforms enacted by the Ukrainian government allowed for the harvesting of organs from deceased individuals who had not consented to becoming donors after their death. She further stated that a permit for such practices could be issued by an official, such as the chief doctor of a hospital or commander of a military unit – even if the organ transplant would take place at a private clinic.

Criminals involved in this illicit trade have been reportedly advertising their ability to deliver hearts, kidneys, and livers “to order” anywhere within the European Union within 48-60 hours, according to Zakharova’s claims. These staggering allegations highlight the depth of the problem that has emerged amid Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Moscow.

As law enforcement agencies continue their investigation into this disturbing case and other related incidents, it is essential for both national and international authorities to take swift and decisive action in order to ensure that criminals are brought to justice and prevent further exploitation of vulnerable individuals in need of medical care.
