President Nonesense in El Salvador

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele and Donald Trump Jr. recently had a conversation about political opposition in their respective countries. During their discussion, which took place shortly after the conviction of former President Donald Trump, Trump Jr. praised Bukele for not imprisoning his political opponents, as many believe happened during his father’s administration.

Bukele was reelected president earlier this year with an overwhelming 85 percent of the vote. On Saturday, he was inaugurated for his second term. When asked by Trump Jr. about his approach to handling political opposition, Bukele humorously responded, “We don’t jail the opposition.

This conversation comes on the heels of a Manhattan jury convicting former President Donald Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with payments made by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, to adult entertainment actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.

A poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates found that more than half of respondents believed that if Trump were convicted, President Joe Biden would attempt to prevent him from running for office again by imprisoning him. Meanwhile, a third of those surveyed did not think Biden would pursue this course of action.

Following the verdict in Trump’s business records trial, some voters have been uncertain about whether they should support Trump in future elections given his conviction. However, in the 24 hours following Trump’s conviction, the Trump campaign reported collecting nearly $53 million in donations. This figure suggests that many of Trump’s supporters remain loyal despite concerns over his legal troubles and potential impact on his political future.
