Exclusive: Trump Seeks Libertarian Support in 2020 Bid

Former President Donald Trump addressed the Libertarian Party’s convention on May 25, seeking their endorsement for his bid to return to the White House. Trump emphasized his libertarian record, including areas where he reduced the size of the federal government and implemented non-interventionist foreign policies. He also vowed to continue fighting against the federal bureaucracy and mentioned his ongoing criminal cases as a political attack by President Joe Biden. Trump promised to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who has spent over a decade in federal prison for creating the dark net site Silk Road. This could be the final speech delivered by the former president before the end of his trial in New York, where he could be convicted on multiple felony charges.

In his address to the Libertarian Party’s convention, Trump mentioned that he had been indicted on 91 different things by the government over the past year, a comment which received enthusiastic applause from the audience. David Dan, an attendee at the conference, cautioned Trump to keep the promises he made to libertarians if he wins the election.

All three major presidential contenders—Trump, President Biden, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—received invitations to speak at the convention. This event marked a significant moment for both Trump and Kennedy, who have been critical of each other’s positions on various issues, including COVID-19 policies and civil liberties.

The speech comes after Trump faced criticism from Kennedy the night before. During his remarks, Mr. Kennedy emphasized President Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that many of our most fundamental rights disappeared practically overnight during the lockdown imposed by the former president. Trump made no mention of either man during his own remarks.
